I cannot say whether or not your knife is a tourist/souvenir item but it does have similar motifs and stylistic elements as the flyssa of the Kabyle people in

Hi Tim, thanks for your response, it's interesting that you draw a comparison to spears from the Nigeria/Cameroon border. I was starting to lean toward a possible Kotoko/Bornu origin but just can't...

Hi all,

I recently acquired a pair of spearheads with a rather distinctive look. They both have inlaid brass and incised patterns that remind me of common motifs in West Africa but their shape...

This appears to be one of the many variations of the hwi of the Fon people (Dahomey Kingdom). Below is a Fon sword from my collection with similar motifs and design elements for comparison.

Hi, I have included a period photo showing a Somali warrior holding a couple of spears that (to my eyes) appear to have wire binding on most of the socket. I have also included a picture of a spear...

Interesting spear, Wiethase's book "Bows, Arrows and Spears of Africa" has a few depictions of similar spears that suggest a northern Cameroon/northeastern Nigeria origin for this type. These...

I think you solved it, great find! That Pitt Rivers Museum example looks close to me, so it would seem that it has South Sudan/Uganda origin. Thank you!

Hi Detlef,

Thanks, it does look somewhat similar to the Lele/Lulua sword on pg. 15, but the hilt is odd. I wonder if it is a recent replacement?
