Help needed with Lebanese Steak Knife/cutlery

This knife looked interesting and has peaked my interest after a mild cleaning and a light etch. Is the pattern mechanical? Do you think a thorough polish will be worthwhile? What was it's purpose? Here is a link that indicates probable origin. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ht=bird+dagger The blade is 8 inches, handle appears to be horn. The bolster appears to have been cast to the blade?

Is it definitely Lebanese? I was wondering if it might be Balkan.

I bought old pocketknife with nearly the same handle (in the form of bird, incl. wings) in Damascus a few years ago.

Martin
