As for shield no. 1 - a real shield, but probably polished/oiled. Not sure about the metalwork...

Luc,

I noticed that most old shields in your books have an outer rim that curled up, and often has holes around the rim.
I am not sure, but isn't that rim caused by the way these shields were made in the old days ?

Best regards,
Willem

Yes Willem, a lot of old shields have an outer rim that curled up, and holes around the rim.Often but not always.

I have an Arussi shield with holes but no rim.

I think that maybe these kind of holes are made during the making of the shield, to stretch the leather.

That is what I thought too, as these holes and the rim on the outside are not very decorative compared to all the other bumps and rims that are formed in the leather.

Very nice arusi shield by the way with all those repairs.
