Java keris for comments old scabbard / new blade ?
6 Attachment(s)
I bought this keris from a picture on the web.
Now in hands I get the idea that the blade is not as old as the scabbard. Any ideas / comments ? |

old silver pendok. your keris seem to be an old blade. your close up pictures are blur. can you provide us more detailed pictures? |
There is quite a difference in execution between the pecetans on either side of this blade .

The trouble with Javanese kerises is that there are so many "skillful" keris makers in Java & Madura. Most of the times, appraising the likely age of the keris by looking at pictures alone is almost an impossible task. This example looks like having an age, but at the same time my instinct tells me it's quite "young" but artificially aged, judging from the sorsoran and ricikan. But I cannot tell with absolute certainty

I lean towards Penangsang's opinion on this keris. I think it could be new with aggresive etching and aging applied.

some more pics of the blade now with peksi

The pesi looks pretty robust. I am still inclined to believe that this is late 20th century or even 21st century work.

Rather new keris. Well made, but new.

Current era, pasar quality.

Yep, I already was afraid so, I was misled by the old wrangka and ukiran. Should have asked some additional pictures first :( |

The greneng work is a little bit weird, since the ron dha is pointing to the same direction. but it might be a different style of greneng form. The kembang kacang is a firm and steady one ( strong and firm kembang kacang / I have a keris with a broken kembang kacang...Ouch ). The Luks/wave of your keris seem smooth and nice ( this is not easy to make ). The gonjo is a sebit rontal style ( mataram style, like the HB style of jogja) the sirah cecak ( gonjo's head) looks healthy and have thr right shape. Your blade made by the traditional method of keris making. the pesi is just fine ( I got a keris with 3cm pesi...this is not fine ) the tip of your keris pointing to the right direction/to the first luk direction. The only thing you should woory is the pamor pattern of your keris, since it doesnt make specific pamor patern we know. or just call it beras wutah OK? Look at the layers formed by the nikel and the iron...you can still find it right? specially on the gandik area...try to count how many layers are they? if you can find more than 8 layers...than it just a fine new keris, like mine. Ferrylaki,
You are right, there is still a lot of craftmenship in such a simple blade. :) |
