Can anyone tell me what these are?
These came from my inlaws estate. I have no idea. They appear crudely made. Any ideas would be appreciated.

THEY ARE RECENT TOURIST AXES I THINK THEY ARE FROM NIGERIA PENDE TRIBE. I AM NOT SURE ON THAT SO PERHAPS SOMEONE MORE INTO AFRICAN WEAPONS CAN EITHER CONFIRM OR CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG.
THEY MAKE NICE WALL HANGERS I EVEN HAVE A COUPLE I PICKED UP SOMEWHERE FOR A SONG. THAT IS ONE OF MY TECKNIQUES FOR COLLECTING, I SING SO POORLY PEOPLE THROW WEAPONS AT ME WHICH I SNATCH AND RUN OFF WITH. ;) |
Thanks for the reply. I agree that they may be tourist stuff. They have come down through and estate so I know they are at least 50 years old. The hammered metal tops are hand made and hand decorated. Too bad the handles are of such poor quaility.
Best to all, Johnds |

I JUST RAN ACROSS A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION ON THE AXES. I HAVE THE AX WITH THE RING SHAPED BLADE AND DOUBBLE TANG LISTED AS FROM THE HAUSA OR BENUE TRIBES OF NIGERIA. I DON'T KNOW IF THE RING BLADE FORM IS A OLD TRADITIONAL STYLE OR NOT BUT THE OTHER FORM HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME AND MAY BE FROM THE PENDE TRIBE?. PERHAPS SOMEONE MAY HAVE MORE INFORMATION ON BOTH FORMS AND HOW LONG THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND.
