Another interesting sword

35" Overall length. 27" blade. Needs a little repair, but was taking pictures for insurance and thought that I would post it for comments.

I think it once had hair. The patina looks like maybe had libations poured on it?

Any ideas?

Hello Bill,

Yes, definitely with tufts of hair on both faces of the pommel.

This piece seems to fall within Albert van Zonneveld's "type a" of swords from the Timor group islands (cp. Fig. 577). The hilt seems very close to the Surik from central Timor (Fig. 554) but the scabbard seems to prevent it from being classified as such? I haven't found any matching scabbard - hopefully it may help to further narrow down its origin!

Regards,
Kai

Nice spine & fuller effect. Good in the hand I imagine?
