Parang Nyabor
7 Attachment(s)
For several years I have tried to find one of these but those few that I have been offered have all had some flaws that made me hesitate.
But this Summer, thanks to one of the forumites, I found it. This is the original Iban, or Sea Dayak, parang before other kind of parang variations became fashionable. I am aware that the kundieng (protrusion at the blade close to the hilt) is smaller than usual but the rest is like a wet dream. This is the sword that Stone mixed up with the South Borneo Malay saber sword, aka Beladah Balabang, when he misnamed that sword Parang Nabur. Michael |
Very nice rare sword.
Congrats Lew |
Hi Michael it is an Parang Nabur even if the krowit looks a little smaller than normal .

Lovely sword ...
Truly an excellent sword Michael. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
In the picture of the end of the blade, towads the tip, there are some fading incised designs that remind me of some of the more recent barung coming from N. Borneo -- notably the two parallel lines and the zigzag pattern of lines below. Any thoughts? Ian. |
Thanks Ian,
The zigzag pattern looks like the generic tumpal motif. In this case maybe it represents male and female reproduction organs (to scare away evil spirits who are afraid of those according to most Dayak beliefs)? Or maybe I should stop reading Freud? Another alternative is that maybe it means that it was meant for me (VVV)? Michael |
