Odd...farm chopper...or something

Hello,
I was watching this interesting tool/weapon, sorely tempted to bid on it. Any ideas as to what it may be? The seller says it's made in USA, 26.5" double-edged blade.

It resembles a pruning tool, but it's short and double edged, and the handle construction is just weird and possibly weak.

Looks like something that could be used for cutting surgercane. Maybe the tang broke & hilt was improvised. Surgercane is grown all over the world so not sure where it might have come from, if it is a cane machete.

Looks like an old brush axe to me.
