Two Puukkos

Hello All!
I think the first Puukko is a fishermans Puukko and is inscribed "Made in Finland" on the blade, it might be hand made. It is 8" overall with a 4" blade and hilt. The second one is very small but extreamly well made. The handle is made of stacked wood and engraved brass parts on the hilt and sheath. The blade has "made in Finland" on the blade as well as a makers mark but I can't make it out. It is 4 1/2" overall with a 2 1/4" blade that is razor sharp. The sheath is made of brass and embossed leather with a loop on it to attach it to a button. I don't think it is a tourist pice because the quality is just too good. I think both are mid 20th century. Ant comments are welcome! |

Hi Mark,
Here is a bigger brother to your small one. 4" blade and 3.5"handle. I love these knives. Emanuel |
The top one is a filet knife as you know. Made by Martiinni of Rovaniemi
Finland (also maker of Rapala brand filet knives). They have their blades made in France and Germany. The second one is a miniature puukko type commonly used for wood carving and by women for sewing work. I'm not 100% sure of the reading, but I think it is by Iisakki Jarvenpaa of Kauhava, Finland. They are one of the oldest and largest producers of Finnish puukko. The "big brother" seems to also be a Jarvenpaa although I can't see the maker's name, the style and the type of engraving on the ferrule is typical of Jarvenpaa work. The handles on both Jarvenpaa are stacked birch bark. Besides Japanese swords, I also collect puukko. Have about 150 with only two duplicates. They are GREAT knives and much under appreciated IMHO. Thanks Rich, it's good to have a name to it. Mine didn't have any markings or signature.
