Silver pommel kris

I have seen a few of these now. I was pleased to score it on Ebay for a very reasonable price. Quality is very evident in both blade and fittings. Some of the blade inlay has a rose tint while other areas are more silver. Was it common to combine suasa and silver inlay? The seperate ganja and design details point to late 19C from what I understand. I have seen a number of similar builds online. The band at.base of of pommel/hilt is thick plated suasa over what appears to be bronze. I believe the othe bands are fully suasa and the woven bands, ferrule and pommel are clearly silver but I.do not know quality. The arch-like inlays at base of blade and spur/arrow like inlay symbols are also seen on other examples
The floral inlay patterns are broadly reminiscent of islamic iconography, and the curved, circular, and drop shapes running up the fuller are reminiscent (to me) of Dayak or Batak iconography. Keen to hear hear current thinking on these. |

Hi Jeff,
What a beautiful kris! I am green with envy! :D I would agree with your age estimation. And yes, I've seen before a kris blade with a combination of silver and suassa inlays but can't remember where. How long is the kris? Best regards, Detlef |
