Kenanga
 

For all those people who have been trying find the essential oil that is the western world equivalent of Indonesian kenanga (kenongo).

A couple of days ago I had the opportunity to smell a whole range of essential oils.

The oil sold in Australia as "cananga" is the same smell as the kenanga that I use, but my oil is very much rougher. My oil has the the bite of a rottweiler, the bite of the cananga is more like the bite of maltese terrier. But it is the same smell.

Find cananga and you probably come about as close as you can to kananga.

I have ordered some (4oz) the listed price is a little over $18.00..... BUT the shipping , handling, and extra charge for small amounts brought the total to around $34.00 :eek: .

It doesn't smell quite like yours Alan (if that's what my last keris was oiled with) ; do you use the stuff straight or do you blend it; if I'm not asking proprietory questions here.

This bottle should last me a few years for my small collection .

Hi Rick. I've heard a formula of 45% Sandalwood, 5% Kenanga and 50% mineral oil. If this Cananga isn't as strong as the Kenanga Alan has been using you might want to play with that ratio a bit. :)

I think I've got to your ratio with a little judicious mixing .
This brand of cananga seems pretty gutsy to me ; it comes with a warning; may cause headache . :eek:

As David has mentioned Rick, its a mix, and the proportions quoted are what I always quote, but I never measure it, I just roughly judge it.

The "mineral oil" I know as "medicinal parafin".

There`s another thing to bear in mind:- there are many different types of sandalwood oil. Some are "edgey", some are sour, some are sweet, some have a saw-dusty smell.

The purpose of the kenongo is just to take the sweet smell off the sandalwood that I personally use.
