I've won a rather nice sewar by a German auction house. The fittings are from gold and silver. 35 cm without scabbard.

Very neat addition, Detlef!

An extremely nice sewar from the western coast of Sumatra. Some close-ups would be great once you receive it.

There ferrule seems to be suasa, right? Nice ensemble!

Regards,
Kai

Thank you Kai! Pictures will follow once I have it in my hands and it has received some maintenance.

The auction house speaks only of gold but I suspect the same, the ferrule looks like suassa.

Detlef

Curious- what kind of wood is this? The grain reminds me of banati.

Hello WW,

I really don't know but you're correct, it looks similar to banati. It shows a really nice chatoyancy in the sunlight.

Detlef

Detlef,

It is a true beauty, and is the gilded material subsea?

Regards, Martin

Thank you Martin, and yes, I think that the ferrule/bolster combination is made from suassa. I used a silver cloth to polish it up and it got dark.

Detlef

It seems kemuning (Murraya paniculata) for me, a curly kemuning. Aging along the time, very well specimen. Kemuning is one of famous wood for hilt/handle from Sumatra to Lombok also for people in southern part of Sulawesi.

Thank you very much for the identification! :)

I was thinking of kemuning but am not fully convinced - for this timber, it would be very strong and regular chatoyance even in burl...

Regards,
Kai
