3 Attachment(s)
Hello,

Happy to share with you a newly-arrived barung from Patikul, Jolo.

Age: c. 20th century
Hilt: baykaskas (budbud)- silver
Hilt: red banati (root)
Scabbard: marang wood (johey oak),
wrapped with black tape,
A piece of old pis siyabit with MOP pieces.
OAL: 20.5 inches/ Blade: 13.5 inches

Notes:
1. the previous owner was an Imam
2. with talismatic inscription/mark on the blade
3. Marang - a much preferred wood for the scabbard. Easy to carve, light and 'gristly' over time.

Saludos,

Yves

Interesting piece. The "nose" and top tail are in modified form and wonderfully and intricately carved.

Hi Yves,

Nice modern piece. As Battara notes, very nice carving on hilt and scabbard. Interesting use of tape instead of rattan wrapping.

Hello friends,

Thanks for the inputs.

As for that 'tape wrapping' - my father did ask the same question to a previously-purchased kris owner from a Philippine Constabulary general who had it as a war trophy.

The tape- serves as a rain/water repellent when the barung is carried during the rainy days.

Saludos,

Yves
