This carte de visite / CdV is from around 1860 - 1880
and originates from the Ottoman Empire. unfortunately the name of the photographer and city where it was taken is neither printed on the front nor backside... Does anyone on the forum knows where this might come from ? Country, people or group? Do you recognize the weapons ? Thnx |
Zeibek. Western Anatolia, mostly around Smirna/Izmir.
Google Zeibek yataghan or search for it on the Forum. The “ears” are specific. |

What is contained in the striped bag hanging from his belt? I have seen this before worn by other armed men from this area.

A bottle of Raki?:-)

Asphidity bag for medicines or eating?
|
Tongue in cheek ?
I understand that's pretty stinky stuff.
That's a lot of Asafetida for one man to carry around, Ed. |
Rick,
Since this isn't a one-off item, but as you say ethnically common, it must have some cultural significance and not likely a bag to carry extra socks. What could/would be carried to produce that shape? First aid, natural roots & leaves for medicines, personal items, magic items? We need to dive deeper into their culture. Best, Ed |
