Pattern weld kalis
 

Sharing this old kalis that I acquired recently. 23in blade, 28.5in overall. Silver wire wrap on the grip, ivory (possibly elephant) on the pommel. I've etched it twice so far, first on FECL, then on white vinegar. It's evenly weighted and handles well for a long blade.

Wow! Very nice Xas. A complete ensemble. Was the pattern on the blade discernible when you first laid eyes on it or was it a surprise to you.
Funny how these type, chevron patterned blades are showing up. Charles posted one not too long ago, now this. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much for the kind words Kino :) It wasn't evident in the pics, but when I unsheathed it for the first time, I noticed the pattern right away- apparently someone had already etched it in the past, in the 90s. I decided to do minimal cleaning and etch it again to appreciate the pattern.

Congrats, interesting Sulu blade and I especially like the hilt, too!

I'd posit that this is a twistcore blade (i.e. torsion pattern welding) that has been flattened out to cover the actual steel core and only a little bit of the surface got grinded away for the finishing of the blade.

Could you please provide more close-ups, also from the distal part of the blade, Xas?

Thanks for the assessment! Unfortunately I can only provide cellphone pictures...difficult to capture some of the lines as there's a "reflector" effect due to some nickel in the mix I think. Sorry for the rust spots- I glossed over some active rust post-etch, and I need to clean the inside of the scabbard.

Wow!!! Congratulations, what a great find!! The pattern on the blade is beautiful and the scabbard still retaining the traditional cloth is awesome! Great job with the etch.
