Hello dear members,

I wanted to show you the omani ? khanjar I just bought,
It was really nice with his presentation box and seemed not too recent,
cf the 2 main pictures...
not expensive but didn't cost nothing...

I thought it was horn but it's not,
really well imitated I find :o ,
transluscent of course, a kind of plastic,
didn't smell plastic but didn't smell burned hair too...
so it must be some kind of polymer...

really recent tourist stuff ?
the global structure-silver wires, embossment of scabbard parts seems not that bad
but the fake coins make me think of really recent stuff
so I'd like please your opinion
biggest loser today I think...
caveat...

Too small the last pictures in medium size...

it is a recent Omani Khanjar but not especially made for tourists. Also the locals wear daggers like this. The metal mountings on the dagger are handcrafted and made of silver, the embroidery too. The handle is made of rhino imitate because as far as I know in Oman it is forbidden to use real rhino since the 1990s.
The "coins" are made of silver, too and are simply decoration elements and no coin imitations.
All in all a nice piece of Omani craftmanship, you don't have to be sad if the dagger didn't cost a fortune.

For addition: The belt has a plastic embroidery and a brass clasp.

I concur with what Robin said. Seen many similar ones in the souk of Muscat.

At least silversmithing is not dead over there. :)

even ( I think ) the picture who illustrates '' a khanjar'' on wikipedia shows this kind with fake hilt :rolleyes:

Quite a good likeness to the subject Khanjar illustrating a simple cloth belt and an Ameriki hilt (plastic) . Eyes of the bedouin decoration below the belt common on Omani Khanjars. Actually fake coins are not used on Omani Khanjars.
