David,
Nice to find one with such a nicely carved hilt. Have you tried etching the blade? Some of these have spectacular pattern welded blades. |

Arrived today after much drama and confusion, to the point that I insisted on opening the package in front of the delivery driver to check it was still there. Is UPS always this bad?
Anyway, it's here and I am very happy with it. There is no doubt that this is a laminated or pattern welded blade, and a very heavy one! A few small chips in the edge,of a kind that experience tells me indicates a very hard high carbon steel edge, comparable with Japanese blades. To date, all the swords that I have from this area are much heavier than Western blades of the same length. But all with small hilts..... |

Nice sikin panjang David, congrats! When they coming with a hulu peusangan like yours the handle is often carved with ornaments.
There are a lot in the hands of our members, see the attached examples from Willem, Thomas and Gustav. |

I have a stupid question, why these swords are similar to Pakayun Murut??
 |

There are no stupid questions! ;) Only stupid answers! :D
But where you see the similarity? A sikin panjang is straight and a pakayun most of the time curved. Or do you see similarity by the handles? On closer examination they are also quiet different. See the both examples from old threads. Regards, Detlef |

I was just asking because of the Y pommel, but after all even yataghans have Y pommels... So I was wrong no culturallinks between panjang and pakayun. |

Whether there is a connection between similar grip styles of different ethnic groups in Southeast Asia is another question.
We'd have to look at the meanings of the handles, honestly, I don't really know. Here is another example of the shape that you call the "Y" shape, a Sumara from Sulawesi compared to Sikin Panjang handles and Pakayun handles. Regards, Detlef |

And even by the Ilongot on Luzon you find this form (itung) or on Mindanao by the Mandayas, see the examples.
