Opinions about lantaka, real or fake
4 Attachment(s)
This is my last adquisition, it isn,t my field but price was good and in Spain normally all weapons from philippines are real and authentic.
Measures 27 in, made of bronze. Opinions are wellcome. When arrived lantaka to his new home I made more pictures. Thanks Carlos |

However, to me the quality of the casting is terrible (visible porosity and incomplete filling of the mould), and the whole piece appears to be very recently cast without any age patination... I hope to be wrong... :( |
I have seen many cannons like that badly cast but they were authentic.
Authentic local currency or weeding gifts not real cannon on board if you want to fire this cannon, it will explode in your face for sure. ;) |
It maybe recently made. Yes the casting is terrible and what is worse is that patina in the crevices is missing.
Also the touch hole - it looks too crisp. These were also used as signal cannons. Yours is not the right size for a signal lantaka. |
Thanks all for the information!!! This is not my area of collecting, when I received lantaka I put more pictures.
I wish lantaka was a good piece. Thanks again Carlos |

Lantaka arrived yesterday ...
Opinions are wellcome again. Carlos |
Any more opinions?
Thanks in advance Carlos |
Sorry Carlos, but this is clearly a modern replica. It's very crudely casted (some were poorly casted, but not this bad)
Many of these were casted and then dumped in the sea so to be sold as shipwreck finds. Even with VOC markings! |
And again round holes are too crisp. Example: the truneon holes - look machine made recently.
And again, as Peter said, the casting is horrible and patina is missing in the crevices. They are still making these fakes in Indonesia and the Philippines, and thus being sold in shops as "antiques". I'm sorry for the bad news. I hope you didn't pay too much for it. :( Dumping in the ocean to fake shipwreck finds? - that's a new one for me and a new low for them. |
Thanks all for the information.
I paid 180 euros...at least is a decorative piece Thanks |
