Kalasan
1 Attachment(s)
Just aquired a Kalasan, wanted one for ages. finally got one inside my budget.
Looks like an Aceh style horn hilt, scabbard held together at the moment with black tape - will rattan wrao that on arrival, or may make brass bands. 23in. blade. very like a straight Yataghan! ANy Info or comments welcome, thanks. |
Hello Wayne,
looks like a good blade! Please add dimensions including blade thickness once it arrives. This piece clearly is Karo Batak and close-ups of the hilt would be good to see. The scabbard apparently is of the simple type and I believe braided rattan would suit it best. Regards, Kai |
Double post - please ignore!

Just arrived. the sharp Blade is 1 cm. at the grip join, will take some more measurements & photos after a bit of a clean, some red surface rust. No pitting visible. It has a strong distal taper to start, slowing down quickly then slower to the point. Scabbard is well made, tho plain, there were a number of braided rings of fine rattan under the black electricians tape, couple were fairly fragile. two broken. I love it already. :D
Anyone know what takes black electrical tape goo stains off wood? It's been there a while. |

WD40 but try a test first. Regards, Norman. |

I wouldn't use WD40, better try linseed oil. Curious to see your pictures! ;) Regards, Detlef |

Arrived end of last week. weighs 526 grams unscabbarded. B;ade 24in. 1 7/16 in. at the widest, 3/8 i. thick at the streaky brown grip, which is roughly 6 in. long.
Some bright spark skidded an angle grinder across it at some point before, so the blade could do with a good polish to get rid of the scars. Took the tape off the scabbard & put some black pony-tail elastic bands on till I find where I put my rattan. 2 originals survive but are fragile. |
