A Gunong for your viewing
3 Attachment(s)
I did a trade today and this is one of three pieces I got.
I believe it is a Gunong, most likely from the 20th Century. I know it is razor sharp. Blade measures about 14 inches. No matter what it sure is pretty. I just hope it is not a tourist piece. Any comments are welcome! |

last, sorry about crappy photos

Sorry Terry, fairly recent. :o So second half of 20th century is correct.
Regards, Detlef |
Detlef is on the money! I agree with him 100%, only adding that the mounts are brass, the scabbard seems to be bone (maybe born), and the pommel is bone in recent form. These were being made in Marawi city (until ISIS showed up  ). Truly from the Maranao tribe on Mindanao Island.

Thanks Detlef and Battara!
At least I was close on the age. Now at least I know the people who made it.Was it made for tourists? Thanks again, Terry |
Out of curiosity. Regarding the engravings. If you look very closely does it appear like the marks that made it are scalloped; Smooth; Or a series of very small indentation, very close together?
|
Yes this was made for tourists and the modern market.

Helleri,
Sorry, forgot to answer your question. Looks to me like hand chiseled to me. Terry |
