A heavy French siege helmet Excavated in Bourgogne.
Two pieces skull faceted in fourteen sections with a pivoted peak This helmet is with additional plates mounted on the skull . Siege helmet with such faceted skull are very rare. Weight about 7 kg. Any comment on it would be welcome. |
weight of 7kg is not possible for a helmet , do you maybe mean 1.7kg ?

That dent is the bullet impact Proving that the helmet would absorb fire from hand gun, the dent it made in the skull, showing that the bullet didn't penetrate.

I see, very heavy to wear though.

Owners necks would have to be stronger than those of Formula 1 pilots, due to G force ;) .

a lot of the weight would be distributed down to the rest of the armour and padding the helmet rested on and thus the shoulders took a lot of the burden. i think they and the rest of the armour were heavier as manning the walls didn't require the same mobility as on a battle field, and the extra thickness helped against missiles. if the enemy ever got over the walls and fighting became hand to hand, a lighter armour might be better. you could switch if you knew when they were going to make it over.
