Newbie with my first Vietnamese sword
5 Attachment(s)
Hello to you all. This is my first Vietnamese Sword. My husband collects old British and Spanish ones but I liked the look of this one and came to your site to research.
Many of the Asian swords out there seem to be lumped as coming from 4 or 5 different countries, so that's not the way to find out. Would someone be kind enough to give me feedback on this one? ;) |
I seem to recall that the figure S stamped in series on these blades was similar in meaning to those bite marks (hogsback/ eyelash marks) on blades from Genoa...as a mark of excellence. Please see http://www.fightingarts.com/reading/article.php?id=183 and http://mandarinmansion.com/antique-vietnamese-arms
Is the round guard missing? |
Hello Canbrit,
welcome to the forum, good to have another woman as member! :) ;) Your sword isn't from Vietnam but from Thailand, called dha or daab and maybe a Vietnam war bringback from an US soldier. The sword is very recent, i.e. from the 70ties last century. Here is a link to an older thread about this sort of dha: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...hlight=vietnam There is mentioned from Andrew also an old thread written from Ian but I can't find it in the moment. Best regards, Detlef |

Hi Ibrahiim, the shown sword isn't from Vietnam but a Thai sword, they normally don't have a guard. Regards, Detlef |

WELCOME TO THE FORUM :D MANY OF THESE WERE BROUGHT BACK DURING THE VIETNAM WAR SO THINKING IT IS A VIETNAMESE SWORD IS NATURAL. THERE WERE SOUVENIR SWORDS AS WELL AS REAL TRIBAL ONES BROUGHT BACK FROM ALL THE SURROUNDING COUNTRIES THOSE DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN THE WAR AND THOSE LIKE THAILAND WHERE LOTS OF TROOPS WENT FOR LEAVE. YOURS SEEMS TO BE A USABLE SWORD NOT JUST ONE MADE FOR A SOUVENIR SO IT SHOULD HAVE PROPER BALANCE AND A SHARP EDGE. .
