Large Excavated Iron Buckle

This iron buckle measures approximately 4 by 3 ¾ by ¾ inches, and it weighs 3 ⅛ ounces. The center bar has remnants of the tine which has rusted away.

How old is it? Does it have a Spanish, English, French, or some other origin? Was it used to fasten a shoulder belt used to carry a weapon (baldric), a horse saddle, or a strap on a chest? If only it could talk.
