Kingdom of Siam Crest
 

Hello all,

My friend has sent me an image of an unidentified crest on a sword he has just purchased.

He was hoping it was a family crest, but looking at it, it looks very similar to the Royal Siamese coat of arms.

I only have this image at the moment, but will hopefully be getting more shortly.

If anybody can shed some light, I would be most grateful.

This image does indeed resemble several of the royal crests used by Thai rulers, especially those from the Ayutthaya period. However, in looking through my records I cannot find one of the royal crests which exactly matches the image that you show--several are close but no precise match. I will be interested to hear what others think.

On closer inspection I cannot see an identical match either.

Just popping this back to the top in the hope that somebody may recognise the crest.

I was discussing it with somebody recently, who suggested a look towards the Indian Princely States might not be a bad idea either.

Any further suggestions are of course, most welcome!

Either the Thai or the Cambodian Royal Crown, looks more like the latter. Their heraldic design kept changing slightly through the past two centuries. A picture of the whole sword might help with the attribution.

I had not considered Cambodia, there are certainly similarities!

Most likely this is a Thai military dress sword. They are the most common you will see on the market which are both old and new. Some are from Sheffield, others from Solingen. Not sure where they are made currently. Following western military tradition it is a dress sword from graduating academy ie. Thai Royal Navy, Army, Air Force or Police.

The symbol you see is of the Royal Crown, which is of Khmer (Cambodian) origin. The Khmer empire at it's height ruled over the regions of modern day Laos and Thailand. When the regions of Laos and Thailand gained independence from the Khmer empire the new ruling powers in Thailand & Laos adopted much from the Khmer royal structure including etiquette, regalia, title structure, language (ie Royal forms of address), Brahmin rituals, etc.

This particular style of crown, I think the style of the rays of light that come from the top of the crown I think most closely match what you see from Thailand.
