Need help identifying a SEA knife
3 Attachment(s)
This good looking knife (small parang?) appears to be of Malaysian origins to me. It is well marked and I am hoping a translation can help us to identify the period and place of origin.
Thanks for the help. n2s |
Interesting knife n2s.
I think that I have seen some of these symbols on Moro kris before. However, the shape of the blade seems more mainland SE Asia or Indonesian in origin. Very interested to hear from others. Thanks for posting this one. Ian. |

It looks like Khmer writing to me

What is most interesting to me is that the symbols on the top line on each side appear printed in the reverse order. So it is not about reading this from right to left or left to right, but from point to hilt. The first symbol on the right is the Arrow, while the opposite side has a Buddha, these are followed by a triangle and then the same 4 words or symbols and another triangle. The second line of text, which appears only on the right side, might be the maker's name.

Hello n2s,
very nice knife you have there! :) When you boring it I would be more as glad to take it from your hands! ;) I am nearly sure that it is a Thai knife, Southern Thailand to be correct. It's a monk blessed knife I think. The inscription is a yant prayer inscription from a monk to protect the owner and is written in Buddhist Pali. I think it has the maha yant of Luang Por Derm engraved on its blade IMVHO. Luang Por Derm died in the 50s last century so your knife is minimum old like this. It could be that the blade is worked from lek namphee, when you will etch the blade and it get a dark bluish colour it is worked from this special steel. I have byself a knife from this steel, when I will find the time I will post pictures. The workmanship of your knife is very good so it could be that it belongs once to monk. Again, very nice knife, I am a little bit envious! ;) :D Regards, Detlef |
