Ivory knife handle?
 

Has anyone actually purchased an ivory antique from abroad, and successfully & legally had it shipped to him in the USA??

US Fish & Wildlife sites have maybe 20 detailed pages, which to my weak mind seem, well, difficult to follow.

So my question is, has anyone in the USA actually done this since Our Glorious Leader banned such imports?

And if so, precisely how?

I would like to get an early 18th century Khanjarli with ivory grips, which is currently in the UK

Ordered it without thinking, right now have left the dealer hanging until I can figure it out, or not.

I think You need to get the UK dealer to submit it for dating by an expert recommended by Defra to obtain legal "cities" recognised international documents.

Runjeet on this forum from Akaal arms in the UK can probably advise you well on this. ;) or indeed provide the expert opinion for the required documents.

Also Don't ship through New York,New Jersey or California...

Even with documents, my understanding is it would be illegal in those states..

Many countries won't ship ivory to the USA. UK is one of them, it would seem.

I stand to be corrected, but I think UK export is no problem as long as Defra... Cities documents are in place?

Oh, Michael Backman told me that he could not ship ANYTHING with ivory to the USA.

Id guess many older dealers all over the world will say that,,,,

But The worlds moving on & the dealers either need to learn the new requirements as well or they will find there out of date,,, :shrug:

Its rather like when computers or mobile phones first came out...Its learn something new or blend into the past,, :shrug:

maybe you can try to import antique ivory via Canada?

As far as i know there is an open border between the USA and Canada.

I have decided to give up on this knife, as best I can tell I would need to get a lawyer involved.

Our Glorious Leader recently banned all ivory imports.

Enough people, musicians &c, objected strongly so that the ban was modified to permit, supposedly, antiques to be imported.

Nevertheless there is, at this time, no functional procedure to do so in our the Fish & Wildlife Service website. Hence need for a Lawyer, which just is not worth it.

If anyone in the USA actually succeds in importing an antique ivory piece, legally, in accordance with our current laws, I sure would be interested in his experience.
