THIS CLOSED ON EBAY A FEW DAYS BACK AND WAS DESCRIBED AS EITHER GERMAN OR RUSSIAN. EITHER WAY ITS A UNUSUAL DAGGER UNFORTUNATELY I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING BUT THE EBAY PICTURES AND CAN NOT READ THE WRITING. PERHAPS SOME ONE CAN OFFER AN OPINION ON THE DAGGER.

Looking at the carving of the hilt maybe Swiss, Black Forest? With what looks to be a very short cutting edge and extremely long ricasso could this be a very fancy knife used for wood carving  I have seen some very old tools that were themselves works of art.

Best,
Robert

I don't know what kind of knife (not a dagger) this is but I can read the script on the blade: FRANZ KAMPFL. As this German name is written in old Germanic letters I assume that the origin of the knife is Germany or Austria before 1945

Agree in all points. Most likely before WWII to be correct.

My guess would be Austrian. There are many WWI Austrian fighting knives, with ornately carved handles. As to it's purpose, I'd guess with only a point, it's a "sticking" knife. For the coup-de-grass after a successful hunt.
