Another premiere?

The upper one is a “common” high class shashqua. The lower one is a high class too, but it was made for someone who was either left hand person or he was used to wear the sword like the rest of the world and not upside down like the Russians did. Notice that the mouth of the scabbard is "cut" so you can touch the hilt from one side. Any Comments?

What lovely things. Tim

Here Here Tim. Lovely. I neophyte question: Are these worn sharp side up?. I dream of having just one example in my collection.
Greg He he, I was blinded by the pics, looks like my question was answered in the text :p |
It looks like the bottom one is georgian, quite unorthodox by all counts. Bigger resolution pictures of: signature, date and the center of what seems to be some kind of military decoration (order of ... ?) would probably help a lot.

Hi Yannis,
It seems you have had a very good month! I would love to see more details of these two. Any marks on the blades? One more of the envious. jeff |
Katana
Hi Yannis,
Someday I hope to get a shashka as nice as yours. The Japanese wore the Katana edge up which I am told allowed them to unsheath the sword and strike or ward in one motion. Given the practicality of such a capability it's a wonder the rest of the world didn't adopt that form of carry. I don't know if the wakazashi was worn edge up for the same purpose or whether it was so short that it didn't matter. Sincerely, RobT |
