Barong with horn collar
12 Attachment(s)
Hello,
I recently got this nice barong, with a horn collar/punto instead of metal. Do I understand correctly that this is a feature seen on Borneo barongs? The blade shows very nice lamination, and an additional etch made the patterns pop right out. Attached, the pics from the seller. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Emanuel |

A few more after another etch...

And another great score, you've been busy. Nice lamination on this one. I don't know about the horn collar being a feature seen only on Borneo barongs, but the experts I'm sure will answer that question for you. I once had a barong that had a collar like this, but was made of bone instead. On the hilt, is that an old repair where the section of wood is missing? It looks to have been intentionally carved out and looks to have the remains of an adhesive still present. Congratulations to you again on this most interesting piece.

beautiful blade, Emmanuel!

Yes, very nice lamination! :) A shame that the pommel is in such a bad condition.

Lovely blade, and I agree that it is almost certainly Yakan in origin.

A nice barung Emanuel!
Congratulations with this find and have a look here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...0&page=1&pp=30 Regards, Maurice |
Hi everyone,
Thank you for the encouraging comments :) As soon as I saw it, I had to get it. I'm loving the pattern-welding. Robert your observation is correct. It looks and feels like someone cleaned up the break at some point for a repair, that evidently did not last. The adhesive material was very dry and it scraped off easily. I'm guessing the pommel is narra burl? I have a nice piece of amboyna that I might use to carve a repair. Yes Maurice, I had looked at your thread before. Trying to wrap my head around what would makes this a Yakan piece. Emanuel |
