Fijian Kiakavo dina club - Lew's Estate

On the basis of the form and smaller size, Clunie (1977) regards these 'spurred' clubs as dance and ceremonial clubs. This example is 30 inches in length and well formed by hand work. An dark old finish shows cracking from contraction and is worn away in areas showing moderately dark wood. The shape is typical for the form, with the main body gently arching forward. The far end has a raised ridge in the midline that shows only very slight chipping. The forward surface has roughly incised decoration. A raised comb is present at the fork from which the spur arises. A few pinprick holes are present along the shaft and there is a band of roughness of the old finish. There is faint evidence that a good part of the shaft was once wrapped. The terminal expands in the usual manner suggestive to many of a certain anatomical part. The aging of the finish and workmanship suggest a 19th century attribution.
