Help and a translation
5 Attachment(s)
I got this one. Not too time ago there was a thread on a similar one I'm not able to find. Then I wish have a translation of the writings (I don't know if the pics are in right sense).
Thank You in advance Paolo |
My best guess would be a Sumbawa knife but its just a guess. It could be a Siraui from the blade shape but to me the hilt and scabbard do not look righ for that. It will be interesting to see what it turns out to be. And I am of no help on the translation.

Looks to me as a rencong. Never seen one like this. Just love it.

Michael is correct, it is a Sumbawa knife. Used for ceremonial rice harvesting. Beautiful example. Such a knife is already long on my wish list. Look on page 74 in A. G. v. Z.
Handle seems to be from hippo ivory. Inscription most probable jawi. Michael has shown a example in this thread: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...hlight=sumbawa And here one more from Charles: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...hlight=sumbawa Regards, Detlef |

Thanks Detlef for the links |
On both sides of the blade I do see "Allah" used twice. Therefore it may be translatable and not Jawi.
|
Thank You for inputs. Two more details : the seller told that hilt is boar tusk, the blade is duble edged.

I need to preface this by saying I know nothing of the languages of this region. So this may be a case of seeing what you are looking for. If I am wrong please correct me.
That said, something in this inscription was tugging at my memory from when I was researching rentcong. So I pulled out "Hands of Time" by Barbara Leigh. After looking at that I would like to propose that part of the inscription ( photo attached) MAY say Bismillahh - In the name of god the merciful and compassionate. Its not identical to the Aceh but its very close to my eye |

Here are the closeups of the hilt (not too good, owing to the light).

Hello Paolo,
clearly hippo ivory IMHO. Regards, Detlef |
cool little knife.
The small square with 2 words over eachother is "Allah - Mohammed" The sentence: Hasbuna Allah wa ne'm alwakeel - Which means: "Allah is sufficient for us and he is THE protector/helper" |
