a kukri for ID please
 

My friend gave me this old kukri with a broken handle.
I don't know much about kukris, so I figured you guys could help me out.
Looks like a similar shape to the "budhume" kukris? Too fat to be sirupate?

I'll be carving a new handle for it soon
as you can see the current one is broken.

Hi KuKulzA28 sorry for slow repley, Ive been suspended for a while, Its a lovely old Nepalese made blade with a symbol traditionally used by some Nepalese Blacksmiths.

Some blades with this mark turned up in the cache of IMA & Atlanta cutlery, brought out of the Nepalese palaces & storehouses in 2003.

At least one example carrying a similar mark turned out to be wootz.

I would think this kukuri would be more desirable with its original handle, even if broken, rather than the best new handle.

I understand that viewpoint, although without any provenance to it, a good workable handle replacement is expectable to me. {Would be different if it had provenance or was historically important in its own design.}

As the bolster is missing & the way the hilt is broken it may have been broken by someone trying to replace the kukri hilt with one from a kukri that had a smaller tang. But without examining it in hand ,I guess that we will never know.

Many partial tang kukri are re. hilted in Nepel evry 10 or so years or as necessary. {after daily use evry day for a multitude of jobs.}

As long as the replacement doesn't look done by BillyBob in his garage , I would rather see this one well hilted.

But the way is broad & the paths are many.
