NICE CONGO SPEAR FOR COMMENT
|
Looks like a nice clean example. When you get could you post better pictures.
What is the binding material? mine has fine twisted cord which I had to stop from rotting. Tim PS Dimensions? |
Very nice spear, Lew. This seller lives in my hometown. I'll have to pay him a visit in the near future :D
Your spear can be attributed to the following tribes from Congo : So, Olombo and Lokele. The binding material (cord ?) is original to the piece. As I said : nice :) |
Now Freddy
Just because the seller lives in your home town doesn't mean you have to buy up all the good stuff :D Please live some for us poor American collectors ;) Regards Lew |

I was so very pleased when I got a good one of these. The binding on this spear looks like strips of leather. Here is a close up of the binding on mine, there is a slight bloom as I had to stop the cord from rotting. I think I am right in saying that they are special dress spears, the blades not being very aggresive yet the spike at the other end is rather heavy, it is on mine anyway, let us know about yours Lew. Hi Tim
The spear finally arrived today. It measures 5.5 ft tall the blade is 14" long and the spike is nice and stout (heavy) and is 15" in length. The wrapping is cord coated with some type of resin. Here are a few pics. Lew 0 |
Looks great!

Great spear to have. Does your spear have a pin in the socket part of the spike before it becomes solid metal? Mine has and I have seen this in other spears from the Congo. Is the solid part of the spike octagonal? Tim

Quote:
There are two small holes in the socket for a pin or nail but the nail was removed prior to shipping so seller could break down the spear to fit in the box. As far as the spike goes yes it's faceted the sellers picture is still active and I can see that it is octagonal in shape. Lew |
To many people these might not be terribly inspiring but they were very high status items in there original context. Tim.
