Recently Purchased Barong

8 Attachment(s)
Hello Everyone:

I recently purchased this barong and I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the region of the Philippines that it hails from and possible any information as to era of its construction?
Furthermore, I welcome any comments or advice on restoration possibilities on the scabbard and blade.

The blade information is as follows:

Type: Barong
Total sword length: 21.5 in
Total blade length: 16 in
Handle length: 5.5 in
Handle Construction: Wood with Rattan weave
Scabbard Length: 19.5 in
Scabbard Material: Wood covered in Rattan weave

Thank you in advance for your help and commentary.

Sincerely,

J Elagu

Hello J,

This looks like a Palawan piece - try the search function on this forum for some more examples.

I guess yours is a post-WW2 example.

I'd just try to secure the rattan on the scabbard - maybe with an additional rattan band?

Etching the blade may yield some additional insights into its construction.

Regards,
Kai
