Would you describe this hilt ?ornament as a naga head or does it look like something else anyone has seen? One eye appears to fallen out over time.
Thanks as always for considering my rather dumb questions.

HMMM, just did the search on Naga I should have done before posting, looks like a cheap modern knock off, oh well nothing ventured?

Drdavid:

Did this hilt come on the end of a Thai sword? If so, it is of very recent manufacture.

Ian.

I believe the Naga is a cobra? based snake-demon,this looks like some other diety to me but I couldnt tell you wich one.

The rest of the sword looks like this, allegedly from Burma but it does not look like a Dha to me.

Yep. That's modern Thai stuff. You can find a bunch of these on eBay.

Battara 13th December 2005 02:03 AM

I agree Ian. Another note is that the naga head looks like a lesser quality lead based white metal with a glass eye.

As others have noted, these have become ubiquitous on eBay. Modern Thai stuff for "those who travel for pleasure." :D

I wouldn't classify the pommel as a naga. More like a generic dragon.

Drdavid, don't feel bad: many of us have picked up one of these (or similar) at one point. :)
