Sorry nobody has answered, looks like the Chinese stuff guys are on vacation.
The 'executioner' term, as we have often discussed, is typically misapplied to many types of heavy swords with substantial blades. This is particularly the case with these ring pommel daos, which derive from a number of variations of much earlier and similar types. Most of the early forms were used primarily by Chinese martial arts groups and in villages which had factions of some of the secret societies.
This appears to be a more modern example of these traditional forms, probably of the Nationalist Chinese era, 1920s or later, which were widely used by Chinese forces. The lurid description of executioner sword may derive from the dramatic displays of Chinese 'Boxers' during that rebellion in 1900, where disturbing events were sometimes carried out with large bladed swords. These were often accompanied by dramatized performances by martial artists to frighten westerners.
These more modern examples were more military and austere versions of these were carried through WWII and probably later. The cord wrap on the hilt is typical of more modern refurbishing.
