Can Anyone I.D. This Mideastern Dagger?
 

Happy New Year, All!

Just joined recently, here's my first post. Can anyone help me identify what in blazes this dagger is? I'm told it's Persian, but I can't find another one like it online. Reminds me of an Indonesian Gunong, but the decorations don't quite work for that.

It's 10 inches including the scabbard, 9 inches without it (5" blade, 4" handle). Seems to be made of wood, bone and brass, with a definite patina to the brass, guessing it's 20+ years old.

Any help identifying where it's from, what type, etc., would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks, all.

Your knife is a Chainpuri churi from Nepal, "churi" being the Nepali word for "knife," and Chainpuri being the locality in Nepal from which they originate.

Thats not from Nepal, its most probably a Knife made recently in muslim China.

I remember seeing an identical knife on eBay just about a week ago. When i say identical, it could be the same piece or it's twin. I took a good look at it because I was considering buying it. I wonder if its the same one. Did you only recently obtain it?

When Kronckew replied to the above-linked thread, his ID was based on a knife sold by a Nepalese exporter and made by a Chainpuri kami, as (was) shown on this thread on another forum:

While the photos have since been deleted, they did in fact show a knife that was - with regards to form and materials - an exact match to my own...

Ya got me. I bought this on eBay about 6-7 weeks ago, thinking it an Indonesian or Maylaysian Gunong. But laEsapada nailed it with chainpuri churi, from Nepal. The one he'd bought is nearly identical (and, yes, mine appears to have been sharpened by an idiot, too! With a file! Ack!)

I've never heard of this type of knife, and I can't wait to run back to my Jordanian knife-dealer buddy (who swore it was Persian) the truth.

(P.S. Got it for a song, too. Very few people were bidding, and I've picked up some more since....usually auctions ending late at night; nice deals!)

This forum is great! You gents solved a mystery I've been tussling with for weeks! I'm already learning more about obscure Asian and Middle Eastern daggers than I ever imagined.

Next up: a real, authentic, vintage Moroccan Koummya. AFTER I sell my car, house, 2-3 dogs and possibly the wife. :eek:
