hello together
a friend has bought this kukri and now knew anything about it. age, origin,... etc. I think that it is militarily, because the numbers? Blade length 33.5ch blades thick 10mm greatest one width 64mm total length 45cm Thank you for everything. greeting Chregu |
Its an early 20th century British Indian Army mk.1 Pattern kukri. There quite sought after by collectors.
When dated the dates on the kukri I have seen are usualy between 1903 & 1915 although some scabbards were made at least as late as 1917. Its worth Checking the spine & scabbard for further marks. The blade markings probably imply use by the 2/8th Gurkha rifless as they have a penchant for marking thier kukris with soldiers & unit numbers. Spiral |
Hi Spiral
I am interested to see you have IDd this as a MkI military kukri .... are there to your knowledge any refs in the lists of changes which refer to kukris and their various pattern as used by the British military ? Also how many Mks are recognised. Thanks |
I did this one awhile back.
linky..... Its not perfect but it may be of some help. There are 5 mk. or pattern kukri but obviously there were many unit purchases from private contracters & some manufacture amongst units as well. Spiral |

A nice Mk1 there Chregu, Have you checked the spine for a FW stamp? The Mk1 seems to have potentially been made from the early20th century to around 1917.
The 2/8th were renowned for having their own battalion kukri rather than Mk issue as this one below; http://www.torabladesforum.co.uk/upl..._Issue_001.JPG typical 2/8th GR armourer markings on a kukri; http://www.torabladesforum.co.uk/upl...8th_gr_kuk.JPG The 2/8th were raised in 1907 from the then 7th GR, so it is possible that this kukri dates from that period, having originally been a 7th GR kukri, that was then armourer marked 2/8th upon the transfer.
