Pretty darn nice dha but from where?
4 Attachment(s)
Here is an interesting dha from my collection that I would love to get some opinions as to where it most likely originates. One unique feature to it is the scabbard which is completely done in pierced silver. I have never seen this feature on a dha before. The handle appears to be elephant ivory and is superbly carved. Plenty of pictures to browse so please enjoy.

Rick, I suggest you edit your original post from pretty nice to superb!
This is one fine looking Dha with a lovely near straight blade! Burma for origins in my opinion purely by design. I'd love to see a good macro shot of one panel of silver, I really want to see the effect of looking through the panel and the background. Very nice! Congrats! |
Wow, Gavin is right...Superb piece Rick! Great condition! Definitely a fine example of the wonderful silver & ivory Burmese craftsmanship. (Burmese hands down no question)
Here are some similar examples, but none quite the level of silverwork...fantastic. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6348 http://dharesearch.bowditch.us/0057.htm http://dharesearch.bowditch.us/C0036.htm Thanks for sharing Rick! |
Yes I was wondering Burma but not sure. For sure the repousse is fantastic as well as the ivory carving! :)
|
Rick, curious what is underneath the pierced silver? Can you see the wood? or velvet? or ???
|
ummm......WOW! :)
|
Beautiful piece, could we have a bit more of a look at the blade please

As promised, here is a close up shot of the pierced silver so that you can see the silver sleeve in the background, albeit with tarnish that is showing through as black in spots. Also a couple of shots of the blade. Very thick spine with long shallow fuller and then 2 very narrow fullers running along the spine.

Fantastic to see the silverwork up close and the blade. Thanks Rick :)
You know I was thinking about the pierced silverwork in SEA and remembered in Thailand with Silver purses: |

Nathaniel thanks for posting those examples of pierced silver from the area. Looks like it is a long standing tradition and I'm sure there are probably other examples of dha scabbards with similar piercings.

Wow Rick.......fantastic ...beautiful...
Moderators.....isn't it about time we had a similie with 'insanely green with envy' :) Regards David |
