Arms & Armor in the Higgins Armory Museum, Worcester, Massachusetts
|
I am a fairly close neighbor to the Higgins and should spend more time over there. That is a great gallery of close up pictures. If not already at hand, there is a searchable presence online from Jeff Forgeng's efforts. A lot of stuff that never sees the day of light.

Great addition - thanks, GC!
I have been told that the Higgins holds the largest armor collection in the U.S. :) Best, m |
The Higgins does have a limited space for exhibition but I have always found something else to consider there when I have visited. One that had taken a few treks there was able to see some of the behind the scenes set up.
http://www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=3199 My own experiences kind of pale beside that but I was able to have Jeff look at a couple of items for me during one of his "take it to the curator" days. If I am guessing right, during a visit there in the early winter of 2008, one of the others from here that day was Lee and friend with something in a sock I didn't get a chance to see that presentation due to other friends taking leave. The rotating special exhibits over the years have always been worth a visit. I have been simply too worn out by the medics this past few years to get back over there. There had been some changes in the layout of some sections the last time I was there and there is a generally great flow to new visitors. The building itself seems quite industrial on the outside. It is across the road and up a hill from the immense Norton Grinding compound that reaches for hundreds of acres. Inside is transformed to a different and homey atmosphere. Beside the armor, the pole arms on display are numerous and outscale the other weapons displayed. The Met in NY must be another vast collection but I have never been there. I have been in and around New England since the 1960s and still haven't even taken advantage of just what is here in Massachusetts. Cheers GC Editing to add a couple of articles Alexi had compiled http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_higgins_vik.html http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_higgins_pole.html |
Wouldn't it be nice to hold a forum seminar there ... ;)

Oh yeah,
The Met collection is huge, and one of the best worldwide! Go there whenever you can! ;) Best, Michael |

Great idea, Rick! Best, Michael |
What great resource, thanks very much for posting it. They've added so much since my last visit. I just did some work for them in January, from the photo gallery, I should have hand delivered it so I could stop in rather than mail it.
