Dagger for ID: Spanish?Gaucho?
Hi all
Here's my latest find, it's quite long (haven't got a measure to hand, but must be a little over 30cm) Seems strangely familiar http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...a/SDC10653.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...a/SDC10649.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...a/SDC10656.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...a/SDC10651.jpg |
Hi Gene,
This would be a Brazilian 'faca de ponta'. Search for this term in this very forum and you will find a few threads discussing these knives typology. The stamp 'O CABOCLO' is the name of the traditional Brazilian peasant mestiço person. You may as well post a close up of the other mark; potentially the seal of some known Brazilian cuttlery; or some foreign (German?) exporter to Brazil. |
nice one! mine is a bit shorter at 25 cm. - i like it. slim and deadly.

Hi Gents,
Excellent thank you. Length is 13-1/2" or 34cm. Blade is sharp and very sturdy, non-plated, extremely well made and functional. Handle is horn and I assume bone. Strangely I saw a small (very late) commercial one at the fair also, with the blade etched to read 'The High Life'. It feels later 19th century. Would that be correct? The makers mark on the other side is a bit indistinct and the staining is right where it's lightly struck. It reads: W&G **OGEL ELB***ELD (4th letter is either E or L) http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...a/SDC10658.jpg |

LOL, just realised "faca de ponta" means "A pointed Knife" |
Hi,
Elberfeld is indeed Germany. The name may be W&G VOGEL. Vogel is not uncomman as a family name in Germany. Best regards |

Thank you Ingelred. You are right :) I've done a search and a list of cutelrs marks has 'W&G VOGEL ELBERFELD' as being 1899, so that seems a good start :) Thank you again Gene |
Hi Folks,
For some images re this type of knife, albeit from an old film about Lampiao: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8RWS...eature=related Lampiao was a famous outlaw and a brief description of his life can be seen here: http://www.timsparks.com/articles/lampiao.html Cheers Chris |
