Info asked for a malay blade.

Hi Members ,
Today i pickud up some stuf and there was also a malay keris blade with a old jawa demam hilt. The only thing i know about this blade is that is in Holland since 1951. Any info regarding the dapur name and region is welcome. Regards, Danny |
Without the sheath, it's hard to tell for sure. But the blade is more like the Bugis-influenced blades found in the Straits of Malacca. So that would put it more Southern Malay/Bugis than Northern Malay. As I mentioned "Straits", it could be from either side of the Straits - Malaya or Sumatra.

Slmt Bleu,
Thank you for answering ! So if i read it good , it,s not sure if it is a malay blade ? This is a kind of good news for me , because it wil mean i can put this blade in a sumatran scabbard ? this will be easyer for me , a sumatra waranka i can find in holland but a malay scabbard wil be more difficult . Are the members that have this kind of blade , i would like to see the fittings and the wranka . Greetz, Danny |
Given that Malaya was formerly controlled by the British, and present-day Indonesia formerly controlled by the Dutch, I think it may also be reasonable that there are more Sumatran and (other Indonesian) kerises in Holland than Malayan kerises. :)
Yes, this keris would not look odd in a Sumatran keris sheath. The only question is what is the appropriate style, given that there are many many different Sumatran sheath styles. :) I have seen similar blades in Minang style sheaths (I'm not suggesting you to do that), but I think it will not look odd if it had the sheath of the sepokal keris I posted a few days ago. Happy hunting for the sheath! |
