When Good Kerises Go (to) Bad (Owners)
Some genius decided what this keris needed was a stag hilt. So I picked this up yesterday, and am wondering... in the collective opinion of the kerisphiles here, is it worth investing the time and effort to restore this?
In particular, I am wondering the following: Is the blade older? Is the pendok (or for that matter, the sheath in general) original to the blade? And if it is worth the effort, how do I begin to go about removing the stag (I think it has been affixed with glue)? Any other observations you can share would be very welcomed and much appreciated. :) http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/8671/kerispendok.jpg http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/4780/bladerk.jpg http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6725/nagab.jpg http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9580/pamor.jpg |
Hi laEspadaAncha
This piece looks pretty bad from the photos you show, are those grinder marks along the edges. drd |
It looks like someone did quite a number on this keris. It does indeed appear that the surface was ground down leaving nasty tool marks and i suspect that the sekar kacang is a later addition as well. I also suspect that the gonjo may be a later, poorly made replacement.
I don't think the pendok is worth saving and personally i wouldn't spent too much money trying to re-dress this poor thing. It's too bad because it looks like it may have once been a much more handsome blade. :( |
Thank you David and (Dr.) David...
So aside from spending money I can't really afford to spend anyway on a project deemed unworthy of doing so, I still might like to "tinker." ;) Any suggestions as to how I more-or-less surgically remove the stag from the piece? Also, how old would you estimate the blade to be? |
bilah tourist, its flat, looks like etched pamor..no real welding work..sry Butstil can be restaured if you please..I here too have one flat tourist keris, to show others difrence between real and not real. Regards
