Followed this odd item on ebay.
A Dukun/ shaman keris estimated Majapahit era ?
Is this something serious, or just made for western eyes ?

You cann't have serious questions about this, cann't you. It is even called a rencong. I've a lot of fantasy, but i cann't make a thing about it. ;)

Looks like some waste steel that got reshaped and then cut into........well.........er...........um.......... ......

Neo 29th December 2010 11:37 AM

Yes, it's an amusing object with nasty workmanship. However, I'm curious about the iron they use ... Does it look like old iron (from old kerises) being recycled, or does it look like new modern material being reworked?

Sajen 29th December 2010 12:30 PM

OMG what a ugly piece of iron! :D

BluErf 29th December 2010 02:13 PM

Looks like the Coneheads meet bug-eyed monster meet Incan nose guy meet Egyptian Pharoah with beard on steroids... :D

Just think a bit about where are we now in a year, and you will understand it....

it's Santa-Claus!!!!

The problematic point is to call it "Keris Tombak" and "Rencong" and "estimate" it as "Tangguh Majapahit" after these three books, all other things may have happened, or may not with this item.

Rick 29th December 2010 09:45 PM

Great minds think alike Gustav ... ;) :D

He does remind me of Ho Chi Minh also . :)

Prices for old metals have gone up, but only non ferro metals.
For iron this is still a high price :)

LOL :D
Yes, that was my feeling too. especially being offered in the X-mas season.

But seriously, I still have some questions.
- Is there any market for such an item within Indonesia, maybe as a djimat ?
- Or is such an item purely made for outsiders/western collectors ?
- Also I wonder if due to the nice book on keris sajen we might encounter more fantasy keris like objects in the future ?

I would think that a book like Ancient Ancestors would be more likely to discourage objects like this. In my quick perusal of that book i didn't see anything that looked like this... :)

Common gentlemen, you got to be serious. Look at the dapur. It's the dukun (shaman or male witch) himself... lol :D

Hello Asomotif, I think I can firmly answer this. Yes, there is a narrow domestic market for such item for different purposes ;) but generally speaking as jimat/charm. From my observation the Semar shape being the most popular. Outsiders? Seriously? Do you mean like mysterious creatures from Mars? Well all I can say is that you don't need Indonesian passport to buy such item. Hope this help.

Hello tunggulametung,

Thanks for your reply.
ET buy keris :) ;) NO, by Outsiders I meant people from outside the indonesian culture.
But from your reply I understand that this object may also be made a a djimat.
The shape of an old man with hat and beard does not look very Indonesian to me, so therefore I had the feeling that this was made for westerners.

Best wishes for 2011 !

Willem
