Things are a bit quiet here lately, so I thought I'd throw this hilt into the ring and see what thoughts on origin might be generated.

It has puzzled me for a long time.

Anybody got any ideas where it might come from?

It looks like a fusion between badek and keris bugis hilt.

Hello Alan,

AFAIK this type of hilt is associated with the Jambi region - pics of some more examples can be found in Karsten's kris disk.

Your hilt seems to be another nice flamboyant variant!

Regards,
Kai

Thanks Kai.

It came off a Peninsula style keris --- the owner wouldn't sell me the keris, but he replaced this hilt with an ivory one and let me have the hilt.

Hello Alan,

can give the same information like Kai, I know this style as Jambi hilt.
Look for example here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=8196

Best regards,

Detlef

Forgive Detlef, but this doesn't look like the same same style hilt at all.

I have seen this variant once before... But i cant for the life of me recall where...

Pages 27, 28, 29 of Sumatera section 3 in Jensen's Krisdisk does show similar hilts that he names as Jambi.

Thanks for the pointer.

Hullo everybody,

Just off the cuff ..... it reminds me of a Peninsular Kakatua hilt.

Best,

I've seen a few examples of this type of hilt on kerises auctioned on ebay. The kerises all look Sumatran to me. Someone told me these are Jambi in origin, but I think it could the source of the information could have come from the same one that everyone is quoting here. :)

Hello David,

here one more thread where you can similar hilts which are attributed to Jambi.

http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ighlight=jambi

And here a keris from Alam which he attribute also to Jambi:

http://alamshah.fotopic.net/c1230877.html --- just see that this is the keris which is pictured also by Jensen on page 26!

Also when the hilt from my keris don't show direct the same style you can see that it is from the same "family" shown in the links. :)
Here a picture more from the lateral view from my hilt. I think that you will agree that it is from the same "family".

Best regards,

Detlef
