Must be a Datu parade piece very sweet :) .
|
WOW, the grain in that wood is gorgeous!!
|
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade . :o
The carving is beautiful but the blade is too long for the scabbard . I've never seen a barong that sat so tall in its scabbard . |
True it does seem like the sacabbard was made for a smaller barong but still it is still sooo..... sweet just display it out of the scabbard if it bothers you. ;)

Ascalon,
That is the best looking scabbard I've ever seen and the carving of the kakatua is very beautiful. Congratulations on a great find. Thanks for sharing. Quote:

I've heard and read this term used many times. What does "parade", in reference to swords mean??[/QUOTE]
By Parade I mean fancier weapons were carried by Datu and higher ranking Moros at most public ceremonies such as weddings or a parade after a battle that they had won. |
I'm not sure that this was for parade use, but more for semi-daily wear.
Datu parade pieces showed more silver, ivory, gold, etc. And you are right Louie in your thoughts about parade usage. Also when visiting another datu they used the good stuff as well. Indeed it is a great piece. |
Very beautilful carvings at the handle and sheat, what a shame that it don't belong together.

Nice all over, but one of the best barong scabbards I have seen, period.
