Fine Old Tulwar For Comment
4 Attachment(s)
Hi All
Picked this up from Artzi the other day. The blade is of very fine quality and the hilt has a very nice design motif. My question is what is the significance of the bumps on either side of the hilt? |
Yes, I believe I very recently saw this one and I must admit that I found it most tempting and attractive. Sorry that I missed seeing you; I made a fast one day trip with a friend.
I would speculate that the swelling in the grip is intended to improve the grasp of the handle and perhaps limit turning of the blade in the hand. |
Nice tulwar Louie, I am sure Lees reasoning is totaly correct.
To me its grip shape also suggets a Sikh or origin most likley? But others much more expierenced than myself with tulwar will/would know much more. Spiral |

Hi Lou,
Really nice looking Tulwar. The hilt design does look quite awkward to hold but I have one similar, in shape not quality, and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it is in hand. As Lee suggested it does afford a good grip and I can feel how the shape would help in countering the tendency of the sword to twist and turn. The British 1788 Pattern Heavy Cavalry sword has a round grip and was criticized at the time for this tendency to twist resulting in a slap rather than a cut, this shape of grip would certainly help in negating that problem. My Regards, Norman. |
Hi Louieblades,
It is nice that you show us your newest tulwar, and it is a nice one. I do however think that is seems as if anyone who get a new tulwar, thinks he has to open a new thread. If you had made a search there are many threads commenting on diamond shaped hilts, so why not choose one of these to show your tulwar on? Jens |

You are correct as far as searching for an answer on diamond shaped hilts which I found but if we were to post our new acquistions on an old thread they might not stir up much comments or interest sometimes posting new pieces helps to stir the pot. ;) :) http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...d+shaped+hilts Lew |
Nice sword Louie.
Always liked the slim blades without too pronounced a curve. How's the feel and balance? |

Lew, you have a good point, but my reason for asking was, that you specifically wanted comments on the hilt, so to me it would be natural to write on a thread commenting on the diamond shaped hilts. This would have meant that comments on diamond shaped hilts would have been kept a bit more together and not spread so much.
You may be right that you will get more attention this way, but I am not convinced. Jens |
