Yet another gunong for comment

Hello,
it seems that it is gunong time! :D ;) Have won this mislabeled gunong with MOP handle, the seller stated that the fittings are from silver. Since we have had recently a discussion about the age of this daggers it would be from great interest for me what you think how old this one is. My guess: 1920-1930  Here the link and the pictures: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Vint...vip=true&rt=nc |
What an attractive piece. It has an almost pesh-kabz shape.
|
Very pretty hilt!
Steve |
I would agree with you - 1930s? Exact dates are difficult for these.
|
MOP sweet.
Congrats :) Lew |
It may even be early 1940s - MOP was a later development.
Hope you etch the blade to see if there is any lamination. |
Do you guys think this is the original sheath. Usually when i see silver ferruled gunongs the fittings on the sheath are also silver....and the gunong does not seem to fit into this sheath fully. Seems a mismatch to me...

would agree at this point. I don't think that it is the original sheath, never have seen a bamboo sheath before. Will tell you when I have received it if the blade fit good inside. Regards, Detlef |

the blade shape and the handle from MOP was what let me bid. Best, Detlef |

Hello Steve and Lew, thank's, Detlef |

yes, will etch the blade. The elongated handle and the thin bulbous midsection let me think that it is more early. You don't think that the midsection would be more bulgy by a 1940s gunong? Best, Detlef |

As I said 1930s at the earliest and 1940s at the latest. One other possibility - the MOP pommel is a replacement at a later time than the midsection. Also most of these seem to come out of Mindanao. However the lack of okir makes me wonder if this is from the Sulu region. |

Thank you for clarification, this is a possibility since the sheath seems to be later as well. That it could be Sulu is an interesting point. Best, Detlef |

Wow Sajen, now that is a lovely piece! Love the knife itself perhaps a bit more than the scabbard. Can tell you that it takes a long time and much handling to obtain such a nice warm "golden" hue on the Mother of pearl handle. Also the siver ferrule looks quite old (bit older than 1930's to me!). Quite a jewel!
Am not an expert on these but would almost say that the knife would deserve a slight better scabbard (dark wood, silver bands?). But this scabbard is certainly also good n old n authentic. >yes the scabbard is from bamboo; very strong material and perhaps better than wood to use, though visually perhaps a bit less 'pleasing'. Thank you Wouter,
I am as well very pleased by my purchase! ;) :D Agree with you about the scabbard, maybe it's an old replacement because the original one was lost, who knows? But the scabbard is well worked and seems to be made for the blade and with the polished up brass it looks nice enough. BTW, the blade seems to be laminated, will etch it by time. Best, Detlef |
Hello Detlef, All that I can say is WOW  and then add my congratulations on this very beautiful gunong that you have added to you collection. I have been waiting to post until you have received it so you would be able to post some better pictures that would show how nice it really is. Again my congratulation on your win. I am very envious.
Regards, Robert |

Thank you very much for your kind words! :) I think we both have a good eye for the ebay sleepers. ;) Regards, Detlef |
A very nice piece. Alas us Brits are not trusted to buy blades on ebay.

Have just given a mild etch to the blade and it showing a very nice lamination. Like you know is it a little bit difficult to show it by pictures but I think it is to seen.
So, what you think Jose? Regards, Detlef |
I like it - glad and good sign that it is laminated.
|
Lovely pattern on a nice knife.
Steve |
