KRIS MARANAO?
4 Attachment(s)
Hi friends,
Sharing one of my father's oldest collection. Supposedly a Maranao kris (?) But I have this feeling that it might be Maguindanao? OAL: 26.26 inches/ blade: 18.5 inches sheath: lacquered wood with aluminum bands hilt/pommel: kakatua motif pommel with braided thread(?) on the hilt. The upper part of the scabbard has a wooden peg(if this is the right term), which, in my opinion is intended for the sword not to slide down the wearer's waist? Possible age? Many thanks Yves |

KRIS MARANAO?

Hello, Much thanks. |
I agree, Mindanao kris in Maranao dress. The lack of carving on the gangya is interesting. I've seen this before on certain Moro pieces, and was told by an old antique dealer in Manila that this usually occurred when extra weapons were made in a hurry for a particular conflict. I'm thinking this one may be WWII vintage and was made "in a hurry."
