Hi there I am a newie to this site so please bear with me. I would, if possible, like to find out about these spears that were handed down to me after my father passed away. I have no idea where they are from or what nationality they are. Can someone, at their convenience, please assist me with my query? I would like to know where from, what vintage and any other information someone might have re these spears please. Thankyou.
PS I think I have attached photos to this???? |
good photo's will help, these look like New Guinea Spear/Arrow.............thanks.................jimmy

I AGREE WITH JIMMY THEY ARE MOST LIKELY FROM NEW GUINEA OR SOME OF THE SURROUNDING ISLANDS. IF THEY HAVE A LIGHT CANE SHAFT WITH A CARVED WOOD HEAD THEN THEY ARE LIKELY ARROWS (THE ARROWS IN THAT REGION ARE FLAT AT THE BACK AND HAVE NO FLETCHING)
THE SPEARS ARE USUALY ALL HEAVY WOOD AND LARGER AND HEAVIER THAN ARROWS. THE MARKING ON THE ARROW ARE TO SHOW WHO OWNED THE ARROW AND PERHAPS THE TRIBE AS WELL AS SYMBOLS FOR GOOD LUCK IN HUNTING OR WAR. THERE IS QUITE A VARIETY OF POINT TYPES IN THE REGION. |

Hello Jennye,
One type is very recognisable as a solomon islands spear. Good chance that the others are from that region as well. Can't help you very much with the age. Did your father travel ? did he collect them himself ? Try google pictures : solomon spear Best regards, Willem |
Thankyou everyone for the quick response. At least now I have somewhere to start. I am not sure where my father got them. Thanks again.

I just found this picture that I took last year in Firenze / Florence Italy.
(How could I forget this :p ) |
The first spear with the large barbs looks like Australian Aboriginal maybe. Could you post some more images of the spears, showing them full length, as well.
